Welcome to LAUS DEO AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS, a small kennel in northwest Louisiana, just south of Shreveport.  I am dedicated to the preservation of the old style Australian Shepherd, who can work on the farm or ranch all day and curl up at your feet at night.

Australian Shepherds, affectionaly called Aussies, are striking dogs.  However, if you judge him solely by his unique exterior, you've missed out on the best parts of an Aussie.  He is quick witted, has boundless energy, a wily personality and unbeatable work ethic.  He is a super intelligent dog that insists on something to do.  His specialty is work and he needs a job to do.  If you don't provide him with one, he will create his own, which may or may not be something you are happy with.  Many Aussies end up in shelters or rescue because their humans never took the time to understand them and give them something to do with all of that drive and intelligence.

Aussies might not be the right dog for you.  They are extremely devoted to their owners and want to be with you all the time.  If you can't tolerate a canine shadow, don't get an Aussie.

They make wonderful, loyal, protective family dogs if socialized correctly.  Aussies are very patient and if raised around children, will tolerate behavior from children that they will not tolerate from adults.   However, Aussies are herding dogs, so they sometimes try to herd the family children, which should not be allowed.  Aussies can quickly become overprotective, which could cause problems if two children are wrestling, playing rough or screaming.  They may even try to interfere when you are correcting your child.  When your Aussie and kids know the rules, however, your Aussie can be a wonderful family pet and companion.

Aussies without jobs are at loose ends.  They need a job to do to give them a sense of purpose.  His strong desire to work and his herding instincts makes him a demanding pet.  The Aussie is an intelligent breed, but not necessarily an easy dog to keep.   An intelligent dog thinks more, which sometimes gets him into trouble.  The owner of a smart dog must be smarter in ways that are important to the dog.  If you don't have the time or inclination to understand your dog, don't get an Aussie.

Due the Aussie's intelligence and strong desire to work, he needs training.   Any training program should be fair and positive.  Most Aussies take corrections well and know when they have made a mistake.  However, training that is unfair or too harsh can cause serious problems.  Aussies love training and enjoy pleasing their owners, but if you don't have the time, patience, perseverence and sense of fairness to train an Aussie, don't get one, an untrained Aussie is guaranteed to be trouble.

Aussies are athletic, agile and energetic, with incredible stamina and endurance.  Casual walks around the neighborhood are not enough exercise.  Aussies love to play and playtime can be very meaningful and fun for both you and your dog and is an excellent way to provide exercise as well as mental and physical challenges for your dog.  Aussies love a good game of Frisbee or fetching balls.  They excel in agility and fly ball.  They have a wonderful sense of humor, making playtime/exercise time a unique experience for both of you, but if you don't have the time or energy to provide outlets for all of that energy, an Aussie is not the right dog for you.

If you are interested in a dog that is athletic, intelligent, playful, wants to work, wants to please you, is watchful and will alert you to dangers, is dedicated and loyal enough to lay down his life for you and wants to be with you all the time...get an Australian Shepherd, you won't be sorry.  (Adapted from an article by Liz Palika, Australian Shepherds, Vol.15, pp 13 - 19).

Laus Deo does not support the breeding of "miniature Aussies," and will not sell to those who do.  Those who advertise "miniature" Australian Shepherds are falsely advertising as such.  Such dogs are not recognized nor registered by AKC, ASCA nor USASA, the registries for Australian Shepherds.  These are not the same breed.  The ASCA Breeders Code of Ethics states that "A breeder should plan each breeding with the paramount intention of improving the breed."  It further states that:  "the breeding of Australian Shepherds is not to be taken lightly."  Laus Deo's breeding program focuses on the preservation of the working style Aussie who is beautifully correct to compete in the show ring, but with the style and brains to do what they were meant to do...herd livestock.

Raelyn, my very active puppy, just chillin' after a long day of playing.  She is super active, but as you can see, she has an off button too!

Laus Deo Bette

Picture
Bette was my very first Aussie, and at the ripe old age of 11 she is still bossing everyone around.  I affectionately call her my Better Cheddar Bear and she is spoiled rotten. I bought her and her sister Sydney from a cattleman. when they were 8 weeks old.  Sydney was a pretty red merle that I picked first, but Bette was the last one the guy had left and I just couldn't separate the two of them, so I bought them both.  Neither one had papers, but they were purebred Aussies.  Their sire was an amazing cattle dog.  I lost Sydney while she was still a puppy in an unfortunate accident.  Because I couldn't register her and didn't want to be guilty of being a backyard breeder, I had Bette spayed.  At the time I knew I wanted to breed and train Aussies, but I also knew I wanted to be a responsible breeder.  Bette is my shadow, always wanting to be near me and always eager to please me.  Neither one of us had any formal training, but somehow she learned the rules and learned how to do what I asked of her.  All I can say is, true to an Aussie's nature, she just wanted to please me.  She is the reason I got hooked on Aussies and the reason I so love red Aussies.  She is my special girl and we share a very special relationship.  She intuitively knows what I need.  This picutre is of her at 10 years old guarding  me on the couch following my knee surgery.  She knows when I am sad and does her best to comfort me and when I'm happy, she shares in my joy by being as wiggley as her now portly body will allow.  I truely believe that girl would lay down her life for me, without any hesitation.  She has been my best friend for a long time now, never letting me down, always faithful, always willing...always pure Aussie!

Bailey

This is Bailey, one of my first Aussies, a blue merle rescue.  A friend told me he had found a dog like my Bette wandering around town and asked if I would take her before someone shot her or she got run over.  It took some searching, but I eventually learned that she was a spayed, purebred Aussie who belonged to a lady who apparently just moved off and left her.  I was never able to find out why she abandoned Bailey.  She was a sweet girl who never gave me any trouble and never exhibited any health or behavioral concerns.  She got along fine with my cats, dogs, people and livestock.  Bailey moved to North Carolina with my roommate and became somewhat of a seeing eye dog for her blind mixed terrier, a job she took to without any training, a beautiful example of the versitility of an Aussie.
